| Who
are we?
Compassionate.
Courageous. Powerful.
We are married and
single, young and mature. Some of us full-time professionals, others full-time
homemakers. We are entrepreneurs, executives, artists, doctors, volunteers,
teachers, students and retirees. We are mothers, sisters and daughters.
Our members are seasoned activists working beside those just putting their
toes in the water of community involvement. We are women with strong ties
to our community, local schools and political and cultural institutions.
We speak out and take a stand when others are silent. We work hard to
achieve our goals. We believe in philanthropy, progressive ideals and
meaningful action can change the world. We enjoy expanding our circle
of friends and have fun along the way. We are seeking like-minded women
of spirit and conscience to join us. We have…A faith in the future.
A belief in action.
The Greater
Miami Section of NCJW was founded in 1921. By 2006 our membership
reached approximately 1000 women. We draw from communities including Miami,
Miami Beach, Bay Harbor, Surfside, Golden Beach, Key Biscayne, Coconut
Grove, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, Aventura, Hollywood, Ft. Lauderdale, Pembroke
Pines, Weston and Boca Raton. Regardless of culture, ethnicity, religion
or race, we share in the spirit of “Tikkun Olam,” Hebrew for
“repairing the world.” And at NCJW/Greater Miami Section,
we’ve discovered a home for our impulse to give the less fortunate
a fighting chance.
Our section is primarily
focused on:
- Advancing
the well-being and status of women
- Advancing
the well-being of children and families
-
Enhancing the quality of Jewish life
-
Ensuring individual and civil rights
-
Supporting a secure Israel and the well-being of all its people
From its inception
the Greater Miami Section has worked fervently to help new immigrants
around the world. Other community service projects include programs for
the hearing impaired, sight handicapped, hot meals for the elderly, establishment
of a “crisis nursery”, a child protection program for abused
children, establishment of the Guardian Ad Litem program
which protects the rights of dependent children in court proceedings,
CHARLEE (Children Have All Rights Legal, Educational,
Emotional) for abused and neglected children, the Hippy Program
(Home Instruction for Pre-School Youngsters) a home based program for
the educational enrichment of disadvantaged pre-school children, the “Safe
Child” project (teaching young children to be safe from
predators), Jackson Memorial Adopt-A-Floor project, support
of the Girls Advocacy Project/GAP Girls Club for female
teenage first time offenders and as a cornerstone supporter of Casa
Valentina, a first-of-its-kind residential program that will
provide former foster girls with supportive housing as they transition
from foster care to independent living.
